Whether with Soundgarden, Audioslave or in his solo work, Cornell\u2019s voice wasn\u2019t just an instrument, it was an eruption of soul. In a recent conversation, producer Michael Beinhorn reflected on what it was like to record that voice up close and the unforgettable experience of trying to capture lightning in a bottle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beinhorn described how every nuance of Cornell\u2019s delivery mattered, the breaths, the exhalations, even the pauses between phrases. \u201cThe way he would release a breath\u201d he said \u201cwas one of my favourite things about how he would sing. There\u2019s no fat anywhere\u201d he explained. \u201cEvery sound he made meant something.\u201d That meticulous attention to detail extended to the recording chain itself, specifically the microphone. Cornell sang into a Neumann U87, one of the most respected vocal microphones in studio history. Yet even that iconic mic struggled to withstand his raw power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe torched five of them\u201d Beinhorn recalled. \u201cThe diaphragms literally could not withstand the power of his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The producer and singer shared a mutual understanding that performance always came first. The gear, while essential, was secondary to the emotion. Beinhorn\u2019s job wasn\u2019t to tame Cornell\u2019s voice, it was to honour it, to build a space where that extraordinary sound could live forever on record. In the end that\u2019s exactly what they achieved.
