The centrepiece is a rare\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Neve 54 Series 12-channel console<\/span><span class=\"\">, one of the last broadcast desks designed by Rupert Neve himself. Every channel has direct outs, inserts, and stereo auxes, painstakingly refitted by Tayte\u2019s tech over six months. \u201cI just want everything to work instantly,\u201d Tayte says. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to be patching when inspiration hits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">A\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Yamaha 9000<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0drum kit and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Ludwig 400 Supersonic snare<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0sit ready in the corner, wired into the Neve and paired with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Curtis Design AL2<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0overheads. \u201cThey\u2019re somewhere between a U67 and a C12,\u201d he explains. \u201cThey get really hot \u2014 I like that in a mic.\u201d Everything\u2019s hard-patched for speed, from the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Yamaha U1 piano<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0with MIDI out to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/o47G1o\"><span class=\"font-[700]\">Apogee Symphony interface<\/span><\/a><span class=\"\">\u00a0\u2014 a gift from Bob Clearmountain and Betty Bennett after his MPG win.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The monitoring setup features\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">vintage <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/vP71zdhttps:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/vP71zd\">ATC SCM50s<\/a><\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0powered by\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Cyrus amplifiers<\/span><span class=\"\">, and the racks hold a mix of colourful and transparent gear \u2014\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Drahmer DL221<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0compressors,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Curtis Design Opri 2<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0preamps, and even a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Revox tape machine<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0used as a \u201cglorified guitar pedal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" class=\"\">Nickols\u2019 journey started far from London studios. Born in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Cheltenham<\/span><span class=\"\">, he picked up a bass at fifteen \u201cbecause it only had four strings.\u201d A lucky win on a local radio contest netted him \u00a33,000 \u2014 enough for a Focusrite interface and a MacBook. \u201cThat was it. Suddenly, I was a producer,\u201d he laughs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">After dropping out of music university (\u201cNobody\u2019s ever asked to see my degree\u201d), he joined a band, experienced his first professional studio session, and realised he\u2019d rather be on the other side of the glass. Mentored early on by the production duo\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Sugar House<\/span><span class=\"\">, he began engineering for them, learning Pro Tools in his flat by recording one band a day for free.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">That DIY work ethic led to his first commercial space \u2014\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Mad Fox Manchester<\/span><span class=\"\">, launched during lockdown. \u201cIt was me and a large-format desk in a flat,\u201d he recalls. \u201cTwo years of convincing people to book sessions they couldn\u2019t attend.\u201d But when the world reopened, the results spoke for themselves. Artists were travelling from London and even overseas to work with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><span class=\"\">London, Abbey Road, and the Breakthrough Moment<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Realising his clients were spending more on travel than on his production fees, Tayte moved to London and started renting rooms at\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Abbey Road<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Strongroom<\/span><span class=\"\">, and other legendary studios. \u201cI\u2019d call Abbey Road, get the rate, and then call bands: \u2018Want to record at Abbey Road?\u2019 Everyone said yes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Working alongside top assistants and runners, he absorbed new miking approaches, refined his workflow, and developed a creative philosophy built on curiosity and respect for the room. \u201cThe assistants always know the space best. I tell them, \u2018Bring what you think works \u2014 I\u2019ll learn from you.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">His breakthrough came with a run of critically praised records and a reputation for pushing artists toward authenticity. Willow Lake is, to his knowledge, the world\u2019s first\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">fully off-grid recording studio<\/span><span class=\"\">, powered entirely by solar energy and rainwater filtration. A custom\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Decca Neve<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0console is being restored for the facility \u2014 one of only two ever made.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Recent projects include a haunting live reimagining of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Pale Waves\u2019 \u201cZombie\u201d<\/span><span class=\"\">, recorded partly in a church for its natural reverb. \u201cI love location recording,\u201d Tayte says. \u201cThe room is as important as the mic. Some of my favourite performances come from places that make artists feel something \u2014 churches, old houses, anywhere with history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He\u2019s currently producing a concept album with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Laura Spear<\/span><span class=\"\">, recording vocals at the site of her Los Angeles home destroyed by wildfires. \u201cIt\u2019s about loss of innocence.
