You can feel the history before you see a single microphone stand. For producer and engineer\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Nick Brine<\/span><span class=\"\">, that feeling has never gone away.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Rockfield has been running for over sixty years. Nick has been there for more than half of that. He arrived as a sixteen year old kid in 1993 and ended up right in the middle of some of the most important British records of the last few decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">This is the story of how Rockfield shaped Nick, and how Nick helped shape the sound of modern rock and Britpop.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"\">A sixteen year old and the strangest job interview<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nick\u2019s Rockfield journey started with a very Rockfield kind of interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">At sixteen, fresh out of school, he came for a meeting with studio founder\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Kingsley Ward<\/span><span class=\"\">. He walked in, sat down and waited for the usual questions about experience, ambitions, favourite records.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Instead, Kingsley spent an hour telling him how terrible the music business was.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cYou don\u2019t want to work in the music business. Go to university, become an architect.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">No CV, no questions, just an older studio owner gently trying to talk a teenager out of a life in studios. At the end Kingsley simply said, \u201cIf you decide you want to do it, give me a ring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">By the time Nick got home he had decided. He called, and that was that.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He sat his last school exam on the Friday, did the interview that same day, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">started work at Rockfield on the Monday morning<\/span><span class=\"\">. The record was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Sepultura\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic font-[700]\">Chaos A.D.<\/span><span class=\"\">. For a sixteen year old metal fan, it was the definition of a baptism of fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nevermind was still fresh in everyone\u2019s minds. Wallace was already a legend. Rockfield was buzzing. Nick, who barely knew what his role was meant to be, found himself thrown into a full scale major rock album.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He did well. Nick, still a teenager, was tape-opping and logging reels for an album that already had five years of material behind it. There were\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">50 or 60 reels of tape<\/span><span class=\"\">, with endless takes and versions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Sessions on that scale simply do not exist in the same way now. There was no internet, very little distraction, just a band, a studio and a lot of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">For Nick, it was the greatest education you could ask for. He watched producer credits shift from\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">John Leckie<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Paul Schroeder<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and eventually to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Simon Dawson<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0himself. As Simon moved from engineer to producer, Nick moved up into more engineering responsibility, especially towards the end of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Most importantly,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">there was downtime<\/span><span class=\"\">. At weekends the band would go home, and Kingsley told Nick to bring his own band in. The Stone Roses\u2019 gear was all set up. Simon stayed on as a one to one tutor. Every weekend Nick was tracking his band, learning the desk and the room inside out.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">After twelve months of that, he was no longer just a tape-op. He was an engineer.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"\">Learning on tape at the tail end of an era<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Rockfield stayed firmly tape-based right into the mid 2000s. There were no in-house Pro Tools rigs. If a band wanted digital, they hired it in.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">That meant Nick learned his craft\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">entirely on tape<\/span><span class=\"\">. Tape editing, drop-ins, razor blades, the lot. Even now he still tracks to tape when he can, using classic\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Studer A80s and an 827<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0for album projects before editing a little in Pro Tools and then going back to tape for mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He treasures what that era demanded from bands and producers: performances, commitment and creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cWhen you are on tape you have to get performances out of people. You cannot fix everything later. Every indie band of the nineties seemed to be queued up at the gate.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Charlatans<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">The Boo Radleys<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">The Bluetones<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Supergrass<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Teenage Fanclub<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Super Furry Animals<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and countless others came through. The success of those records meant Rockfield was booked solid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nick met\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Ash<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0when producer\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Owen Morris<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0came in to make their album\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic font-[700]\">1977<\/span><span class=\"\">, including the hit\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">\u201cGirl From Mars\u201d<\/span><span class=\"\">. They were huge Roses fans and asked Nick if he could give their tape to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Ian Brown<\/span><span class=\"\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The band was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Oasis<\/span><span class=\"\">. The lads were\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Liam Gallagher<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Tony McCarroll<\/span><span class=\"\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nick handed the tape over to the Roses, saw Liam and the band popping back to check whether it had been heard yet, and then started bumping into them down the pub. They specifically asked for Nick, but he would have been there anyway, working with Owen.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nick engineered on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">What\u2019s The Story, Morning Glory?<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Be Here Now<\/span><span class=\"\">, the second and third Oasis albums.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Morning Glory<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0was recorded at Rockfield.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Be Here Now<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0sprawled across several major studios, including\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Abbey Road, Air, Master Rock<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Ridge Farm<\/span><span class=\"\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">For a nineteen year old engineer, the scale of the sessions was surreal. Months at Abbey Road and Air, string sections in big London rooms, press intrusion, fans at the gates, and nights that ended with his hotel room designated as the unofficial party suite.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cEveryone else could go to bed, except me. I was the lowest rung on the ladder, so my room was the party room. No one could quite explain what the song was \u201cabout\u201d, so Owen decided they needed an actual\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">wall<\/span><span class=\"\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Rather than simply putting Noel Gallagher on a low boundary, they found an old stone wall on the Rockfield grounds. Noel was hoisted up onto a stool, given a step ladder to climb, and handed a guitar. An\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Neumann U87<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and another mic were set up, carefully covered because it was drizzling with rain.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Kingsley wandered round the corner to find a world famous guitarist sitting on his wall in the Welsh drizzle, birds and crows all around, microphones exposed to the elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Those birds you hear at the start of the album are from the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">outtakes of that outside recording<\/span><span class=\"\">, flown onto the front of the record. That take became the guide track for Wonderwall. Guitars were being smashed in an argument. One of them was clearly his.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He kept his head down, patching and preparing the next song. When Noel arrived and saw the damage he went straight to the point. One guitar was his, the other turned out to be Nick\u2019s budget Fender acoustic, a present from his mum.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Liam insisted he should take Nick to Denmark Street to buy a replacement. Noel argued that he knew more about guitars and should be the one to choose. In the middle of all this, Noel suddenly led Nick down to his guitar rack, pulled out a Takamine and said:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cYou remember this guitar from Rockfield, right?\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">It was the Takamine Noel had used all through the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Morning Glory<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0sessions. He had taken it up to his bedroom at Rockfield, written songs on it, taken it to Mustique for the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Be Here Now<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0demos, and used it on the recordings where\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Johnny Depp<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0played.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Noel handed it over. Jason the tech fetched the case. Just like that, a modest Fender bought by Nick\u2019s mum had turned into a guitar that carried a piece of Britpop history.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nick still has it. Long before the nineties,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Black Sabbath<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0came as teenagers, with a young\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Ozzy Osbourne<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0working with Kingsley in the early days of the studio downstairs and up in the attic rooms.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Iggy Pop<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Hawkwind<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Mot\u00f6rhead<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and many others came through in the seventies.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Google \u201cmost famous heavy metal studio in the world\u201d and you will find a quote from Ozzy:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cHeavy metal was born at Rockfield.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nick has spent evenings with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Lemmy<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0at the Rainbow in LA, talking about nothing but Rockfield. He has seen how deep the studio\u2019s reputation runs in the rock and metal world. It is woven into those early Sabbath sessions, into Lemmy\u2019s memories, into the way musicians talk about the place everywhere he goes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"\">Tractors, courtyards and creativity without sample packs<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Part of Rockfield\u2019s magic is the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">space itself<\/span><span class=\"\">. The Coach House and Quadrangle live rooms, the famous drum corridor, the courtyard, the fields and barns, even Kingsley\u2019s old tractor, all became sound design tools in the days before sample libraries.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Nick talks about the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">drum corridor<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0as the secret weapon on many nineties records. That long, reflective space, miked up at the far end, gave those explosive snare sounds you hear on records from bands like The Verve.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">courtyard<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0became a drum room too, with kits set up facing each other and microphones in the four corners, capturing reflections off the stone walls. With no neighbours to disturb, bands like\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">The Beta Band<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0could play outside for hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">If a producer wanted a sound \u201clike a thousand slaves dragging a rock\u201d, they did not reach for a plug-in. They dragged out\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Kingsley\u2019s plough<\/span><span class=\"\">, recorded birds, rain, chains, whatever the song needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">There were other hidden spaces too. Kingsley\u2019s brother had a house up on the hill with a barn full of old Rockfield gear, including an early Trident console and tape machines. Nick\u2019s band rehearsed there. He cut demos for Rockfield label artists. Working around a hundred hours, cycling home at four in the morning if there was no room to sleep at the studio, he was effectively earning about 29 pence an hour. Ten pounds of that went straight to his parents for digs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He would have done it for free.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">As the nineties rolled on and he began working more with Owen in other studios, he had to go\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">freelance<\/span><span class=\"\">. The label world was changing, budgets were shifting, and bands often wanted him to produce their records in their usual studios when Rockfield was fully booked.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">By nineteen or twenty he was a freelance engineer and producer, still very much an in-house guy at Rockfield but also travelling to American studios, learning different consoles, workflows and studio cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He also had his own band,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">The Dragonflies<\/span><span class=\"\">, with deals in London and eventually a shot at Atlantic Records in America. Producers on the table included\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">David Kahne<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Tom Dowd<\/span><span class=\"\">, two opposite ends of the production spectrum. That album did not quite happen, but the experience pulled him further into songwriting and co-writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"\">Tape to Pro Tools, and what has been lost and gained<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">The arrival of Pro Tools at Rockfield was typically unceremonious. One day Nick walked into the control room to find boxes stacked up.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">\u201cWhat is that?\u201d \u201cThat is Pro Tools.\u201d \u201cWhat are we going to do with it?\u201d \u201cI do not know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">They set it up and started cutting and copying tracks, realising quickly that this was a new world. It made some things easier. It certainly allowed for more \u201cexcess\u201d, as Nick politely puts it, on some of the wilder sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">However something was lost as well. The patience you need to wait for a tape to rewind. The focus that comes from knowing you cannot endlessly fix everything later. He works in many different places, across many styles. Yet Rockfield remains his\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">first choice<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0when he can get in.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">He loves the feeling as you drive up the lane after thirty two years and still get that same buzz. He loves showing new bands around and watching their faces as the history hits them. He loves pushing up the faders in the Coach House or the Quadrangle and hearing a band play live in a room that has held everyone from Sabbath and Queen to The Stone Roses and Oasis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<blockquote class=\"w-auto\"><p><span class=\"\">\u201cWhen those faders go up and there is a band in that room, that is the buzz. That is walking out at Wembley.
