They immediately place you inside the strange, unresolved world of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">The Bewlay Brothers<\/span><span class=\"\">, the closing track on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Hunky Dory<\/span><span class=\"\">, and one of the most debated songs in David Bowie\u2019s entire catalogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">When I spoke with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Ken Scott<\/span><span class=\"\">, he shared a story that perfectly captures Bowie\u2019s mindset at the very end of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Hunky Dory<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Right as the album was wrapping up, David came running into the studio one morning, visibly excited.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019ve got a new song. We\u2019ve got to record it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s called\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">The Bewlay Brothers<\/span><span class=\"\">, but don\u2019t listen to the lyrics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Ken, understandably, questioned that straight away.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">\u201cWhat do you mean, don\u2019t listen to them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">David\u2019s response was classic Bowie.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">\u201cThey don\u2019t mean anything. Over the years, Ken told me he has heard six or seven completely different explanations of what the song is supposedly about, fractured identity, sibling relationships, childhood memories, psychological duality, autobiography, mythology.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">And the punchline?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Ken believes Bowie probably agreed with every single one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">This was David at his most knowing and mischievous. He understood that ambiguity invites participation. Once a song is released into the world, the listener completes it. Meaning is not fixed, it is discovered, projected, argued over, and reshaped.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<h3><span class=\"\">A Perfectly Unresolved Ending<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">As the final track on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Hunky Dory<\/span><span class=\"\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">The Bewlay Brothers<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0feels like a door closing quietly rather than a grand finale. After the melodic sweep of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Life on Mars?<\/span><span class=\"\">, the swagger of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Queen Bitch<\/span><span class=\"\">, and the introspection of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"italic\">Quicksand<\/span><span class=\"\">, Bowie ends the album with something opaque and unsettling.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p><span class=\"\">There is no explanation offered. No neat resolution.
