The guiding target is clear: make it feel dry, tight, and controlled, even though the room is big and live and there are dozens of acoustic sources. The solution is not \u201cmore processing,\u201d it is smart capture, disciplined routing, and then using buses to add just enough polish and glue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1600\">One of the most useful takeaways is his philosophy on the mix bus: he is not relying on stereo bus processing to make the record happen. Instead, he builds the sound category by category, drums, tuned percussion, bass, guitars, keys, harp, strings, brass, vocals, and lets the sum of those bus choices become the final mix.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1660\">Drums: tight groove, minimal mics, and one bold choice<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1661\" data-end=\"1897\">He keeps an old school layout, drums at the top of the session, and the groove is intentionally dry and driving. The kick is simple at the source, two mics, kick in and kick out, plus a sample Hal made to add a bit of dirt and attitude.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1899\" data-end=\"1926\">Mic choices worth clocking:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1927\" data-end=\"2192\">\n<li data-start=\"1927\" data-end=\"1954\">\n<p data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"1954\">Kick in: Sennheiser 421<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"1976\">\n<p data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1976\">Kick out: U47 FET<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1977\" data-end=\"2092\">\n<p data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2092\">Snare top: Sennheiser MKH800, not typical, however it gave him focused punch with surprisingly controlled bleed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2093\" data-end=\"2117\">\n<p data-start=\"2095\" data-end=\"2117\">Hi hat: likely a 414<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2192\">\n<p data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2192\">Toms: Lewitt 640s, and he is proud of the fact he is doing no EQ on them<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2194\" data-end=\"2645\">Processing wise, the kick has a twist. He uses FabFilter Saturn in a way he does not usually, essentially as a tonal shaper to bring out top end snap. Then an EQ and a gate style tool to tighten ring and reduce bleed so the kick can sit loud without the kit turning messy. On the drum bus he leans on PSP VintageWarmer for saturation, top end, and parallel compression, giving the kit a bit of pump and drive while keeping the overall vibe controlled.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2647\" data-end=\"2945\">There is also a lovely old school studio trick, a stairwell chamber. Bandrika Studios has a big stairwell near organ chambers, and Jason put speakers and mics in there to create a natural, almost analogue snare chamber. Jason\u2019s point is simple and powerful: this is not an EQ fest. The magic is level and rides.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3259\" data-end=\"3477\">He shows how extreme the rides can look when soloed, and how completely logical they feel in context. That is a real world reminder, dense arrangements do not always need \u201cmore plugins,\u201d they need intentional movement.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3479\" data-end=\"3524\">Bass: making acoustic speak like a record<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3525\" data-end=\"3801\">The bass performance moves between acoustic and electric. On acoustic bass he uses a pair of RED 47 mics, one near the bridge and one near the F hole area, with most of the tone coming from the lower body mic. He mics the hollow body guitar itself to capture fret and body detail, then blends that with the amp mics.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4510\" data-end=\"4524\">Amp mic blend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"4527\" data-end=\"4537\">Shure 57<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4527\" data-end=\"4537\">Royer 121<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4553\" data-end=\"4766\">On the guitar body mics he mainly uses EQ to clear low end bleed from the nearby bass player. He even says he does not mind bleed because it adds depth and space, he just shapes it so it does not cloud the record.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4768\" data-end=\"4831\">Keys and colour: grit, width, and \u201cmake it sit in the room\u201d<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4832\" data-end=\"5012\">The keys are largely Emily Bear, and you hear a consistent aesthetic: if something feels too close or too clean, he gives it a touch of room tone or grit so it lives with the band.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5014\" data-end=\"5025\">Highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"5028\" data-end=\"5069\">Soundtoys for texture and midrange grit<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5028\" data-end=\"5069\">Little AlterBoy to pitch a piano part up, taking it from cool to \u201cthat\u2019s the hook\u201d<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5028\" data-end=\"5069\">TG12345 for heavy compression on that pitched element<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5028\" data-end=\"5069\">A mono Wurly widened with drive and modulation, then carefully ridden so it ducks around vocals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5314\" data-end=\"5458\">That Wurly section is a great reminder that width and movement are often earned through automation and arrangement awareness, not just a preset.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5460\" data-end=\"5500\">Harp: a deliberate decision to widen<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5501\" data-end=\"5785\">The harp is recorded with Lewitt 640s close in stereo plus MKH800 room mics. Jason uses lots of EQ to get sparkle, and he uses a phase tool to widen it by pushing it slightly out of phase on purpose, because the recording was so perfectly in phase that it felt too narrow and literal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5787\" data-end=\"5921\">That is a bold move, and the key is his intention.
