It simply describes a different mindset. SSL EQs are precise and predictable. No detented pots. No recall. Proportional Q with no dedicated Q control. The more you boost, the tighter it becomes. The gain range is intentionally limited, roughly plus or minus 10 dB, which encourages you to push things further and listen harder.
