Around 14,000 responses later, one plugin came out on top: the original Oxford Drum Gate.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"364\" data-end=\"515\">Fast forward to NAMM this year and Sonnox quietly introduced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sonnox.com\/products\/oxford-drum-gate-2\"><strong data-start=\"425\" data-end=\"447\">Oxford Drum Gate 2<\/strong>.<\/a> On paper, it is an update. In practice, it is a serious evolution.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"863\">Sonnox describe Oxford Drum Gate 2 as\u00a0<strong data-start=\"555\" data-end=\"609\">the complete toolkit for tidying up acoustic drums<\/strong>, and that is exactly how it behaves in a real session. This is not only a gate, it is a full drum cleanup and enhancement system built around\u00a0<strong data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"787\">Detect, Decay, Align, and Level<\/strong>, plus\u00a0<strong data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"829\">MIDI triggering and MIDI export<\/strong>\u00a0for replacement or reinforcement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"1143\">I put it straight onto a mixed rock track by\u00a0<em data-start=\"910\" data-end=\"934\">The Last International<\/em>, just to see whether it could improve an already finished drum mix. It is the combination of:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1327\" data-end=\"1498\">\n<li data-start=\"1327\" data-end=\"1352\">\n<p data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1352\">Source aware defaults<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1384\">\n<p data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1384\">Frequency conscious damping<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1419\">\n<p data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1419\">Phase and alignment correction<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1459\">\n<p data-start=\"1422\" data-end=\"1459\">Levelling and hit consistency tools<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"1498\">\n<p data-start=\"1462\" data-end=\"1498\">MIDI trigger and MIDI export options<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1500\" data-end=\"1716\">Once you tell it what the source is, kick, snare, tom, hats, etc., it intelligently configures itself. No endless tweaking just to get into the ballpark. It understands what it is processing and responds accordingly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"2292\">One important detail from the guide explains why it feels so \u201csmart\u201d. Oxford Drum Gate 2 uses an\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"1856\">intelligent Machine Learning approach<\/strong>\u00a0to tell the difference between kicks, snares, toms, and hi hats by\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"1934\">timbre<\/strong>, not by loudness. That also explains a big shift compared to traditional gates. The main control in Detect is not a dB threshold, it is a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2073\" data-end=\"2097\">Confidence Threshold<\/strong>, meaning how closely a hit matches the selected drum type. Because it is separating by tonal profile rather than pure level, you can keep quiet snare ghost notes while gating louder kick spill.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2590\" data-end=\"2960\">If the automatic classification is not perfect on the odd hit, you have quick, practical tools for fine tuning. You can\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2710\" data-end=\"2719\">Learn <\/strong>a low confidence hit you want to keep, or\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2762\" data-end=\"2772\">Remove<\/strong>\u00a0a high confidence spill hit you want to gate out. In other words, you are not trapped in endless parameter changes, you can simply teach it what to do on the few problem hits and move on.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2967\" data-end=\"3005\"><\/h2>\n<h2 data-start=\"2967\" data-end=\"3005\">From Sloppy to Surgical, In Seconds<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3007\" data-end=\"3165\">With everything bypassed, the drums sounded aggressive and exciting, however there was bleed and ring everywhere. In a dense mix, that blur becomes a problem.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3167\" data-end=\"3198\">Engaging <a href=\"https:\/\/sonnox.com\/products\/oxford-drum-gate-2\">Drum Gate 2<\/a> instantly:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3331\">\n<li data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3229\">\n<p data-start=\"3202\" data-end=\"3229\">Tightened the snare decay<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3230\" data-end=\"3264\">\n<p data-start=\"3232\" data-end=\"3264\">Reduced excessive cymbal bleed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3265\" data-end=\"3294\">\n<p data-start=\"3267\" data-end=\"3294\">Increased perceived punch<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3331\">\n<p data-start=\"3297\" data-end=\"3331\">Brought forward transient attack<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3333\" data-end=\"3465\">The snare in particular went from broad and slightly smeared to laser focused and cutting straight through dense guitars and vocals.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3467\" data-end=\"3691\">On heavy rock mixes, where you are competing with wall of sound guitars and massive synth layers, this becomes a genuine advantage. The guide calls out\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3977\" data-end=\"3995\">Resonant Decay<\/strong>, which lets drums resonate naturally in their fundamental range while the rest of the spectrum tightens faster, which is ideal for controlling cymbal spill.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4154\" data-end=\"4591\">On toms, this is exactly what you want. You can frame the tom\u2019s fundamental range with the frequency handles, keep the body and weight, and then use\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4303\" data-end=\"4317\">HF Damping<\/strong>\u00a0to progressively tighten the high end where the spill lives. There are\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4389\" data-end=\"4420\">Standard and Adaptive modes<\/strong>. Adaptive is designed for the real world scenario where spill sits in the same general frequency range as the drum body, which is often the case on ringy toms and snares.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4593\" data-end=\"4816\">There is also a really useful function called\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4639\" data-end=\"4656\">Shorten Decay<\/strong>, which adapts decay based on hit strength. Softer hits can close faster, louder hits can ring naturally, and you do not have to compromise in either direction.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4818\" data-end=\"4994\">Finally, you can choose how hard you want the gating to be with\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4882\" data-end=\"4900\">Gain Reduction<\/strong>.
