We\u2019re big, bad, and back in black for another FAQ Friday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This week\u2019s questions dive into three areas that come up constantly in the studio and in the comments:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>My go-to vocal processing chain<\/li>\n<li>Cheap vs expensive gear, is there really a difference?<\/li>\n<li>How to train your ears to hear more detail<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Let\u2019s jump in.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">What\u2019s Your Go-To Vocal Processing Chain?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The honest answer?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I don\u2019t really have one.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I just finished mixing David Bennett\u2019s upcoming album, which features multiple singers across different songs. Even with the same singer on two different tracks, I approached the EQ and compression slightly differently. Why? Because the song dictates the treatment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If I\u2019ve recorded the vocal myself, I\u2019ll usually compress on the way in. That means I\u2019m not fighting dynamics later unless the arrangement is incredibly dense. Once I\u2019m mixing, I tend to reach for tools I know inside out.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember69\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here are the ones I come back to again and again:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Waves Audio Renaissance Compressor (R-Comp)<\/strong> \u2013 A long-time favourite, incredibly versatile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Waves Audio R-Vox<\/strong> \u2013 When I want something more aggressive and forward.<\/li>\n<li>SSL-style channel strips from <strong>Solid State Logic<\/strong>, <strong>Waves Audio<\/strong>, or <strong>Brainworx<\/strong> \u2013 I absolutely love the top end on an SSL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I owned an SSL 4000 console for nearly 20 years, so that sound is in my DNA. The high end is smooth and musical. I\u2019ll often:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High-pass to clean up unwanted low end<\/li>\n<li>Add a touch of 200 to 300 Hz for body if needed<\/li>\n<li>Boost 7 to 12 kHz for air<\/li>\n<li>De-ess<\/li>\n<li>Brighten again<\/li>\n<li>De-ess again<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That \u201cde-ess, brighten, de-ess\u201d approach creates a halo of air around the vocal while keeping harsh upper mids under control. You\u2019re letting the shimmer through while taming the bite.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If I want ultra-air, something like the Massive Passive-style air bands can help. However, most of the time, R-Comp, R-Vox, and SSL-style EQs get me exactly where I need to go.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There is no magic chain. There is only context.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"ember76\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Cheap vs Expensive Gear: Is There Really a Difference?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This is a big one.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Let\u2019s take the classic 1073 example.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A true high-end clone like the <strong>BAE Audio 1073<\/strong> is built with extraordinary care, often using premium components and transformers faithful to the originals by <strong>Neve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Then you have lookalikes. Same colour. Similar knobs. Very different internals.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We once did a shootout between five different 1073-style units, from vintage to boutique to entry-level. When we nulled them against each other, the differences were not subtle.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The more expensive units tended to have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More depth in the low and low-mid region<\/li>\n<li>A slightly more forward presentation<\/li>\n<li>A silkier high end<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember84\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">However, here\u2019s the important part.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember85\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Is the difference massive? No. Is it there? Yes. Is it worth 3x the price? That depends entirely on you.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember86\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I always think of it like cars. A \u00a370,000 Jaguar gets you extremely close to a \u00a3750,000 Ferrari in performance terms. The last few percent costs exponentially more.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember87\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That\u2019s how audio gear works.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember88\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Two key factors matter:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember89\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">1. Reliability<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember90\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If I\u2019m spending serious money, I want something that lasts decades. The original Neves are still in service today. That longevity is part of the value.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember91\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">2. Sonic Character<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember92\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A 1073 has a sound. It\u2019s full. The high end is silky. The midrange is beautiful. I love it on snares and kicks. On vocals, I usually track flat, maybe high-pass if the room is noisy, and shape the rest in the mix.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember93\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">However, inexpensive gear can absolutely win.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember94\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I\u2019ve used a 1970s Yamaha acoustic on major records that beat out beautiful vintage Gibsons and Martins when we actually put a mic in front of them. A beaten-up Ludwig Supraphonic I bought for \u00a3150 has been on more albums than most boutique snares.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember95\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The point?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember96\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If it inspires you and sounds great, use it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember97\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Don\u2019t let gear snobbery stop you from making music. We should be encouraging creativity, especially now when AI is threatening to replace real human expression. The tool matters. The music matters more.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"ember98\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">How Do You Train Your Ears?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember99\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Short answer?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember100\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Work. Work. And work some more.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember101\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There are fantastic ear-training tools that help you identify frequencies, and they\u2019re fun. However, you don\u2019t need to know the difference between 3.1 and 3.2 kHz to make great records.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember102\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Listen to great music<\/li>\n<li>Use reference tracks<\/li>\n<li>Mix regularly<\/li>\n<li>Learn your tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember104\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Reference tracks are incredibly important. When I mix, I almost always have something to compare against. It might be something I mixed years ago to get back into that headspace, or a commercial track in the same genre with similar energy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember105\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Trust your ears.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember106\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If a frequency spike annoys you, deal with it. If it doesn\u2019t annoy you, even if you see it on an analyser, maybe it\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember107\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Remember this: Ray Davies was in his late teens and early twenties when he wrote songs like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Waterloo Sunset<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>You Really Got Me<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>All Day and All of the Night<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember109\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These were young musicians creating timeless music without the benefit of modern plugins, analysers, or infinite tutorials. Just ears, instincts, and hard work.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember110\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I\u2019ve worked on nearly 3,000 released songs. The people I know who are massively successful did not get there because of ear-training apps. They got there by doing the work.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember111\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There are no shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember112\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Use the educational tools if you enjoy them. Add them to your process. However, never replace real-world mixing and recording experience with theory alone.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"ember113\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember114\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Whether we\u2019re talking about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vocal chains<\/li>\n<li>Boutique gear vs budget gear<\/li>\n<li>Or training your ears<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember116\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It always comes back to the same thing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember117\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Make music. Trust your instincts. Put in the hours.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember118\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If you\u2019ve got a \u00a34,000 mic pre, fantastic. If you\u2019ve got a budget interface and a pair of Sony 7506s, fantastic. The album I just mixed was entirely in the box, mostly on headphones.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember119\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">What matters is the result.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember120\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Thanks for watching and reading.
