However, if a guitar is well recorded, it already has all the top end it needs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">So instead:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I boosted around <strong>1kHz<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>High-passed unnecessary low end<\/li>\n<li>Added light compression, just 1 dB or so<\/li>\n<li>Used a limiter to gently catch transients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That midrange push brings the guitar <em>forward<\/em>, giving it presence without harshness.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember76\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And importantly, the acoustic becomes almost percussive, acting like a rhythmic glue in the track.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Vocals \u2013 Control Before Compression<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">With multiple singers across the album, there was no one-size-fits-all approach.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The biggest takeaway we discussed:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Clip gain before compression.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Instead of forcing a compressor to deal with wildly uneven levels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I manually raised quiet words and phrase endings<\/li>\n<li>This allowed the compressor to work <em>evenly<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Result: natural dynamics without over-compression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Chain highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>De-esser first, always<\/li>\n<li>Subtle EQ cuts around <strong>500 Hz<\/strong> to remove muddiness<\/li>\n<li>Gentle compression, 1 to 2 dB<\/li>\n<li>A second stage limiter just catching peaks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember85\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Reverb was heavily controlled too, compressed before being sent, so it remained a consistent \u201cshimmer\u201d rather than jumping in and out.<\/p>\n<h3><img frequencies<\/li>\n<li>Compression to stabilise performance<\/li>\n<li>And the secret weapon: <strong>low-level upward compression<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember92\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This brings out quiet details without making the track louder overall.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember93\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The result is a cello that feels <em>present and emotional<\/em> throughout.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"ember94\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Bass \u2013 The Tim Palmer Trick<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember95\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This is a technique I\u2019ve used for years, learned from Tim Palmer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember96\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Split the bass into two worlds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DI = clean low end<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Amp = character, distortion, midrange<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember98\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Then blend them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember99\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Add to that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sub harmonic enhancement for depth<\/li>\n<li>Careful filtering to avoid mud<\/li>\n<li>Slight cuts around <strong>80 to 100 Hz<\/strong> to leave room for the kick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember101\" class=\"ember-view drums together at Brighton Electric Studios, aiming for a 70s-inspired feel.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember110\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That meant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Softer, more supportive drums<\/li>\n<li>No overhyped snares<\/li>\n<li>Controlled ambience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember112\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Key techniques:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blended room mics with added reverb to simulate space<\/li>\n<li>Multiple kick mics:D112 for attackD12 for vintage toneFET for sub frequencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember114\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Each mic had a job. My role was to enhance that, not overwrite it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember124\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Every EQ move, every compressor, every reverb choice was in service of the <em>song\u2019s emotion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"ember125\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember126\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Working on <a href=\"https:\/\/davidbennettpiano.bandcamp.com\/album\/under-an-empty-sky\"><em>Under an Empty Sky<\/em><\/a> was a reminder of why collaboration matters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember127\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When you sit in a room together, listen critically, challenge ideas, and stay open, something special happens.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember128\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You stop mixing <em>tracks<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember129\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You start shaping a <em>story<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember130\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And that\u2019s what this album is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember132\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If you haven\u2019t heard it yet, I highly recommend diving into Under an Empty Sky.
