A few years ago, I tested the original Sphere microphone system, which was originally made by Townsend Labs before Universal Audio acquired the company. Since then, UA has expanded the idea into what they now call the <strong>Standard Modelling Microphones<\/strong>, using Hemisphere modelling software.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The range includes several different mics, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/k4ov4d\">SD-1 dynamic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/jrLDbP\">SP-1 pencil condensers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/JkmAkE\">SC-1 condenser<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/5k7GjN\">SD3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/xJNvnv\">SD5<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/KBZGx9\">SD7<\/a>, and more. UA also designed these mics to work neatly with Apollo interfaces, with presets intended to get you towards album-ready and broadcast-ready sounds quickly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">So this isn\u2019t just a collection of inexpensive microphones. It\u2019s part of a much bigger ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Why We Wanted To Test Them<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The reason I got interested was because we visited the rather wonderful <strong>Rabea Massaad<\/strong> in Brighton a few months ago. He had been recording drums using these mics, and I asked him, \u201cHow do they sound?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">His answer was very simple:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u201cReally good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember76\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And of course, he had just made an album with them, and it sounded fantastic. I\u2019ve worked with Blair for about 25 years, and if you follow the channel, you\u2019ll have seen him many times over the last decade or so.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Blair does a lot of remote drum recording from his own room, and he gets fantastic results. No samples. No heavy processing. No \u201cfix it in the mix\u201d nonsense. The idea was to get the best drum sound we could from the UA mics and see how they compared.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember88\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We used 11 mics, including kick, snare top and bottom, toms, overheads, hi-hat, mono room, rear mic, and even a mono overhead for fun. Some decisions were made right there in the room, which is honestly how sessions go. We had to choose between a kick out mic and a mono room, and we chose the room because I wanted some ambience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember89\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">First Listen: No Modelling<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember90\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Before opening up the fancy plugin, I wanted to hear the mics flat.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember91\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And honestly, that was one of the biggest surprises.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember92\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">With no modelling, no EQ, no compression, the mics already sounded good. The kick had attack and weight. The snare had snap. The toms had plenty of body. With no modelling, it already had great attack and a very modern punch.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember96\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Once we started using the Hemisphere plugin, the DN52 model gave us that familiar big dynamic kick mic weight. It had low end, it had punch, and it felt immediately useful.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember97\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Then we tried something fun: duplicating the kick track and using a sub-style model on the duplicate. Because it\u2019s the exact same performance and exact same mic capture, it stays perfectly in phase. And yes, the 57 model sounded like a 57. It did the thing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember102\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">However, I kept coming back to the SD3 with no modelling on it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember103\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It had this lovely transient, this \u201cspank\u201d on the front of the snare that just worked. It sounded modern, open, and exciting. I did a little EQ, the kind of EQ I\u2019d normally do anyway, however the raw mic was really giving me something I liked.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember104\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">So in the final drum sound, we used modelling on most of the kit, however left the SD3 raw on the snare top.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember105\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That\u2019s the beauty of it. You\u2019re not forced to use the modelling. You can choose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember106\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Toms, Rooms, and Overheads<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember107\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">On toms, the modelling helped control some of the ring and focus the sound. The 409-style model was particularly useful. It brought the toms forward, tightened the transient, and helped reduce some of that \u201ccardboard box\u201d low-mid area that often needs cutting anyway.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember108\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For the mono room, I ended up liking a 414-style model. It gave the room a slightly more finished quality, not drastic, just a nice bit of polish.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember109\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The overheads also benefited from modelling in a subtle way. It felt like the transients were being smeared ever so slightly, in a tasteful, classy way. That\u2019s something we often associate with analogue gear. That\u2019s incredibly useful.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember113\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">On a normal hi-hat mic, you\u2019re usually reaching for EQ or gates or just living with the bleed. Here, the modelling tools gave us another way to shape the capture.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember114\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Very cool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember115\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">The Bigger Realisation<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember116\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">What I found myself doing was going back and forth constantly:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember117\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Do I prefer the model? Do I prefer the mic raw? Do I want a blend? It has more of what you\u2019d expect from a traditional, carefully chosen mic chain: body, low mids, and familiar character.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember125\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The UA setup sounded a little more modern and open. In some cases, it was brighter. In some cases, it needed less work. In others, Blair\u2019s traditional mics had a bit more weight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember126\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The biggest difference for me was the room setup. Blair\u2019s normal setup had stereo rooms, whereas we only used a mono room with the UA mics. That naturally changes the overall size of the kit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember127\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">However, even with that limitation, the UA mics held up really well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember128\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember129\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This was incredibly revealing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember130\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The big takeaway for me is that the UA mics sound good before you even touch the modelling. That\u2019s huge.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember131\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Then, once you add Hemisphere, you get a whole new level of flexibility. You can model a kick mic, change the snare character, tighten toms, smooth overheads, shape hi-hat bleed, or duplicate a track and create a perfectly phase-aligned second mic sound.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember132\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For me, the standouts were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/xJNvnv\"><strong>SD5 on kick<\/strong><\/a>, strong, modern, punchy<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/5k7GjN\"><strong>SD3 on snare<\/strong><\/a>, especially raw, with no modelling<\/li>\n<li><strong>409-style models on toms<\/strong>, focused and controlled<\/li>\n<li><strong>414-style mono room<\/strong>, polished and useful<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proximity control on hi-hat<\/strong>, genuinely practical<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember134\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I like the mics. I like the modelling.
