class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">How Do You Preserve A Classic Band\u2019s Sound While Still Making A Modern Record?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One of the big questions we asked Mike was:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember69\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>When recording Black Sabbath, how do you balance preserving the band\u2019s classic sound while still achieving modern production?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Mike\u2019s answer was wonderfully simple and deeply important:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You start by being authentic to who the band are now.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Bands do not sound exactly the same as they did 40 or 50 years ago. Their instruments change, their amplifiers change, their playing changes and, of course, they grow as people. The job is not to force them to sound like a museum piece. The job is to capture what they actually are.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is such an important point.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">So much of a band\u2019s \u201csound\u201d does not come from a pedal, an amp, a microphone or a plug-in. It is the way he phrases them. The little slides, the half tones, the quarter tones, the vibrato, the way he moves into the riff. Mike described that \u201csludgy,\u201d sliding quality in Tony\u2019s playing, and that is such a huge part of why his riffs feel so massive.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Tony\u2019s sound is not just distortion. It is not just power chords. It is his hands.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Mike also talked about how incredibly tight Tony\u2019s double tracking is, without sounding grid-like or mechanical. There is a tolerance in the timing, a tolerance in the vibrato and a feel that makes the guitar wide, powerful and human.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is something we can all learn from.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Great performances are not always about being perfectly locked to a click. Sometimes they are about knowing what the riff is supposed to feel like so deeply that you can double it naturally, with all of the personality still intact.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember84\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Why Modern Production Is Different<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember85\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We also got into drums and how expectations have changed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember86\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If you listen to the first Black Sabbath album, there is so much space. Guitar, bass, drums and vocal. The toms speak beautifully. The tuning is obvious. There is room around everything.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember87\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But modern records are different. Audiences now expect punch, width, low end, clarity and a full-range experience that reflects what they hear through a powerful live PA system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember88\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">As Mike pointed out, when Sabbath started, they were a band in a room being recorded with the technology available at the time. That was the sound. Today, we have different tools, different expectations and different ways of presenting the same energy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember89\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The trick is not to imitate the past badly. It is to understand the spirit of the band and present it honestly with the tools of today.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember90\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is a huge lesson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember91\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Tape Was Not Magic To Everyone Using It<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember92\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One of my favourite parts of the conversation was when Mike talked about tape.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember93\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These days, we often romanticise tape because of the way it changes the sound. However, back when tape was simply the format everyone had to use, engineers were not always thinking, \u201cWonderful, let\u2019s make this warmer and vibier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember94\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A lot of the time they were fighting hiss, noise, generation loss and limitations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember95\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That does not mean tape is not wonderful. It absolutely can be. However, context matters. If the guitar is wide, it leaves space for the drums. If the bass player is following the energy of the arrangement, everything finds its place.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember102\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is why great bands sound great before you start mixing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember103\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You do not have to force everything into place when the arrangement already understands where each part belongs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember104\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Mike\u2019s Most Memorable Moments<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember105\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We also asked Mike about the most memorable experiences from his career, and his answer was not just about gear or technical decisions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember106\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It was about the experience.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember107\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">He talked about growing up loving Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELO and Queen, wondering what it must have been like in the studio when those records were being made. Then, later in life, finding himself in the room with legendary artists, creating music and living those moments himself.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember108\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One of the biggest highlights for him was getting to know <strong>Ronnie James Dio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember109\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Mike spoke about Ronnie as a down-to-earth, incredibly talented and genuinely lovely person. You can make a record with those two microphones. You can put a 57 on guitar, snare or almost anything loud, and a 414 can handle vocals, overheads, acoustic instruments and room sounds beautifully.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember122\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is a great reminder that reliability and versatility matter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember123\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Why Faders Still Matter<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember124\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Another fantastic part of the conversation was Mike talking about control surfaces and why he still loves mixing with faders.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember125\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">He mixes in the box, however he does not want to mix everything with a mouse.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember126\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">His analogy was brilliant: if you walked onto a plane, turned left and saw the pilot controlling everything with a mouse, you probably would not get on that flight!<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember127\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Mixing is tactile. It is physical. You need to feel the music.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember128\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Mike made a great point that when some people moved fully in the box, they started EQing more and balancing less. That really resonated with me. Before you reach for EQ, compression or automation, start with the fundamentals:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember129\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Level. Panning. Phase.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember130\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Those three things can get you a long way.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember131\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A fader makes you interact with the music differently. You can move more than one thing at once. You can rebalance instinctively. Experience matters. The process matters.
