I was there taking part in panels, having conversations about where our industry is heading and, of course, spending plenty of time with our friends from Abbey Road Studios.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\n<p id=\"ember63\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There was a tremendous energy throughout the event. You could walk from a discussion about the future of music and artificial intelligence straight into a demonstration of a new instrument, recording console or immersive audio technology.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is what made SXSW London so exciting. It was not simply about looking back at the history of music. It was about understanding how that history can help shape what comes next.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Bringing Abbey Road to SXSW London<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Abbey Road had a significant presence at SXSW London, with its own area showcasing new technology, historic equipment and some fascinating collaborations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It felt as though we had been transported directly into Abbey Road itself.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There were pieces of equipment derived from the original REDD and TG consoles, historic limiters and EQs, microphones inspired by classic EMI designs and a range of new Abbey Road products that bring the studio\u2019s heritage into modern production environments.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember69\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One of the recurring themes throughout my time at SXSW was the idea that history should not become a museum piece.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The equipment, techniques and ideas developed by Abbey Road and EMI remain incredibly relevant. It is comparatively dry, tightly controlled and has fixed listening positions. You know exactly where the listeners are sitting, where the speakers are positioned and how the acoustic space behaves.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Rather than simply adding an exaggerated reverb effect, the team approached the car as a blank canvas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Mirek began experimenting with tools inspired by Abbey Road\u2019s historic equipment, including EQ, stereo widening, saturation and impulse responses captured from the studio\u2019s rooms.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Some of the ideas he expected to work did not. Other ideas that initially appeared unusual became central to the finished sound.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One particularly successful element was inspired by EMI\u2019s original Compander noise reduction system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Compander was designed by EMI in the early 1960s to reduce tape hiss. However, Abbey Road engineers discovered that using only the encoding stage could create an exciting, bright and energetic character.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It became one of the studio\u2019s secret weapons.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Mirek incorporated that idea into the car audio processing, alongside Studio Two-inspired acoustics, EMI-style EQ and stereo spreading.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember84\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When the processing was bypassed, the sound appeared to collapse. When it was re-engaged, the entire car seemed to come to life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember85\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The difference was not gimmicky. It was subtle, musical and engaging.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember86\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That was extremely important.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember87\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Many attempts to create simulated listening spaces can quickly sound artificial. The Abbey Road approach was not about making the music sound as though it had been played through a speaker at the far end of a large room.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember88\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It was about changing the listening environment itself.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember89\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The user can move between smaller and larger acoustic spaces, add more of a vintage high-frequency character, introduce a more modern low-mid punch or widen the stereo image.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember90\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is almost like creative calibration.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember91\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Instead of approaching playback solely from a technical or analytical perspective, Abbey Road has applied the mindset of a recording and mixing engineer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember92\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The question is not merely whether the system is technically accurate.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember93\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The question is whether the music feels more exciting, open, wide, clear and emotionally engaging.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember94\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is a very different way of thinking about consumer audio.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember95\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Abbey Road is now exploring how this technology might translate into televisions, laptops, mobile devices, soundbars and other listening systems.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember96\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It also represents a return to Abbey Road and EMI\u2019s roots. EMI was not only involved in recording studios and record production. Charles had already been exploring Abbey Road\u2019s visual archives as inspiration for his fashion work, but he was also deeply interested in music and sound.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember106\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The team visited his workshop at Somerset House with portable recorders and began capturing anything that produced an interesting noise.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember107\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">They recorded sewing machines, knitting needles, rolls of fabric, shoeboxes and other objects from the fashion studio.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember108\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Anything capable of producing a sound became a potential instrument.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember109\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">They also captured impulse responses from the enormous stairwells inside Somerset House, creating a unique reverb that became part of the finished instrument.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember110\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Charles and his musical collaborators later came into Abbey Road Studio Two, where they experimented with triggering drums using fabric and other materials from the fashion collection.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember111\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The result is a wonderful combination of fashion, sound design, recording history and modern sample programming.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember112\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The sounds were chopped, processed, stretched and distributed across the keyboard inside Kontakt.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember113\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Big Nessie includes drums, loops, basses, pads, guitars, sound effects and other unusual textures. It also includes distortion, tremolo, reverb, an arpeggiator and several creative processing controls.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember114\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Most importantly, it feels like an instrument rather than simply a folder containing samples.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember115\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You can sit down, play it and immediately begin creating music.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember116\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is also completely free, which makes it an incredible opportunity for musicians and producers to explore some of these ideas themselves.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember117\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-65103 lazyload\" of equipment on display was the original EMI RS56 Universal Tone Control, better known as the Curve Bender.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember119\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Designed in 1954, the RS56 is widely recognised as the world\u2019s first parametric equaliser.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember120\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It was originally designed for Abbey Road\u2019s disc-cutting rooms, but engineers soon realised that it offered far more control than the EQs built into the studio\u2019s recording consoles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember121\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The original REDD console EQs were extremely limited. Engineers generally had high and low-frequency controls, but they could not precisely select frequencies or alter the shape of the filter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember122\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The RS56 changed that.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember123\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It allowed engineers to choose frequencies, adjust gain and select different curve shapes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember124\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Even the terminology feels wonderfully musical.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember125\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Instead of using purely technical descriptions, the EQ offered settings such as blunt, medium blunt and sharp.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember126\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The frequencies were also organised around the key of C, reinforcing the musical thinking behind the design.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember127\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The unit is completely passive and enormously heavy, filled with mechanical components and complex switching systems.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember128\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One particularly ingenious feature allows the left and right channels to be linked or controlled independently simply by pulling or pushing the control.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember129\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is a beautifully simple solution created through extraordinarily complex engineering.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember130\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The design philosophy behind the RS56 continued through Abbey Road\u2019s later TG consoles, mastering desks and modern products such as the <a engineers have used it on orchestras, strings, guitars, drum overheads and film scoring sessions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember153\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is one of the most impressive things about well-designed equipment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember154\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It can have a distinctive personality while still being useful across a huge of the largest pieces of equipment at the event was Chandler Limited\u2019s Abbey Road console.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember158\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The console draws inspiration from Abbey Road\u2019s historic REDD and TG desks, which were used on recordings ranging from The Beatles and Pink Floyd to film scores including Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember159\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Chandler Limited founder Wade Goeke worked closely with Abbey Road to develop a console that captured the sound and workflow of the originals while providing the flexibility required by modern studios.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember160\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The console is hand-wired and uses components based closely on those found in the historic desks.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember161\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Where original components were no longer available, the closest modern alternatives were carefully selected.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember162\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The result is not simply a reproduction of one particular console.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember163\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is a modular system that allows studios to combine different Abbey Road circuit designs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember164\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A studio might choose valve-based REDD channels for some sources, transistor-based TG channels for others and configure the console around its own workflow.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember165\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That modularity is particularly exciting because every producer and engineer has different preferences.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember166\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Some people naturally gravitate towards the depth and harmonic character of valve equipment. Others prefer the speed, punch and clarity of transistor designs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember167\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This console allows those personalities to coexist within a single system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember168\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The same TG preamp heritage can be found in the <a class=\"rbJlXBzRbySbuPCWQzjoswVAGlGBFmEhY \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/DKA0vy\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Chandler Limited TG2 Abbey Road Microphone Preamp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember169\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There is also a compact <a class=\"rbJlXBzRbySbuPCWQzjoswVAGlGBFmEhY \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/1G26Q6\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Chandler Limited TG2-500 Microphone Preamp<\/a> for studios built around the 500 Series format.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember170\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For engineers looking for a more complete front-end recording channel, the <a class=\"rbJlXBzRbySbuPCWQzjoswVAGlGBFmEhY \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/zzRWkx\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Chandler Limited TG Microphone Cassette Channel Strip<\/a> combines TG-style preamplification, equalisation and dynamics in a single unit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember171\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The console itself is also remarkably expandable.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember172\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Some installations have been configured with as many as 48 channels, although powering that many valve circuits requires a substantial collection of power supplies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember173\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The illuminated faders provide a small modern visual touch while maintaining the classic feel of the original consoles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember174\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is serious equipment, but it is also designed to be inspiring and enjoyable to use.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember175\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That sense of fun is important.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember176\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Studios are creative environments. conversations about the future of the music industry.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember191\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We are living through a period of enormous change.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember192\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Artificial intelligence, immersive audio, streaming, new production tools and changing consumer habits are all reshaping the way music is created, distributed and experienced.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember193\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">However, one thing became very clear throughout the event.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember194\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Technology is most exciting when it supports creativity rather than replacing it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember195\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The most compelling products I saw were not trying to remove musicians, producers or engineers from the process.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember196\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">They were giving creative people new ways to express themselves.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember197\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Whether it was transforming the interior of a car into a more musical listening environment, turning a fashion workshop into a playable instrument or rebuilding the sound of a 1950s console for modern studios, the common thread was human creativity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember198\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is what gives these technologies meaning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember199\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">History as a Starting Point<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember200\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Spending time with the Abbey Road team is always inspiring because they understand the value of their history without being trapped by it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember201\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The original EMI engineers were constantly experimenting.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember202\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">They used equipment in ways its designers had never intended. They modified circuits, misused noise-reduction systems, pushed compressors beyond their normal operating range and invented tools whenever the existing technology was not enough.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember203\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is the real Abbey Road tradition.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember204\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is not simply a collection of famous rooms or historic equipment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember205\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is a culture of curiosity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember206\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Big Nessie, the Abbey Road Sound Mode, the modern Chandler console and all of these new projects continue that tradition.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember207\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">They take something from the past, place it into a new context and ask what else it might become.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember208\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">An Incredible First SXSW London<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember209\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">SXSW London was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends, discover new technology, participate in some important conversations and celebrate the relationship between music, creativity and innovation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember210\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There was a great sense that the different parts of our industry were coming together.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember211\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Artists were speaking with engineers. Producers were speaking with software developers. Fashion designers were creating instruments. Recording studios were helping shape consumer audio systems.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember212\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Those connections are where genuinely new ideas begin.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember213\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I left the event feeling inspired, encouraged and excited about what comes next.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember214\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The tools will continue to change. The formats will continue to change.
