The studio has moved and evolved over the years but its connection to the city\u2019s music scene has never disappeared.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember63\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The studio is now owned by composer and producer <strong>Andres Pollak<\/strong>, who purchased EastSide Sound from its founder Lou Holtzman three years ago. At a time when many engineers were still cautious about digitally controlled recording equipment, the Series 10 offered a glimpse of the workflows that would later become standard in modern DAWs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The studio later installed a Neve console with a particularly historic background. According to Marc and Lou, it carried serial number 13 and was one of the early 16-bus Neve desks associated with sessions including Led Zeppelin\u2019s <em>Physical Graffiti<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc first entered this world as an intern. He pulled cables, helped wire rooms and worked alongside Lou as the current EastSide Sound facility took shape.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">As Lou explained during the tour, the studio was built with blood, sweat and tears. It offers an analogue signal path alongside modern digital connectivity including Dante integration.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The studio can therefore work completely in the analogue domain, move audio digitally between the Harrison desk and Pro Tools or combine the two approaches depending on the needs of the session.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember84\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For engineers who want access to the Harrison sound without installing a full-format console, Harrison also offers the rackmount <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/dyVBQk\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">32Classic MS Channel Strip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember85\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Monitoring is handled by soffit-mounted <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/bkv2zk\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">ADAM Audio S5H studio monitors<\/a> with ATC monitors used as midfields.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember86\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The surrounding racks are packed with an enormous selection of analogue equipment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember87\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc points out a pair of <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2FLA2A--universal-audio-la-2a&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Universal Audio Teletronix LA-2A compressors<\/a> alongside several <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2FELI8XM--empirical-labs-el8x-distressor-with-british-mod-and-image-link&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Empirical Labs Distressors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember88\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There are also several <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fsearch%3Fs%3DManley%2Boutboard&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Manley processors<\/a>, Focusrite units, vintage Ampex equipment, Trident B-Range channels and a substantial selection of <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fsearch%3Fs%3DAPI%2Bmicrophone%2Bpreamp&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">API microphone preamps and 500 Series modules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember89\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc also points out several pieces of <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fsearch%3Fs%3DChandler%2BLimited%2BTG&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Chandler Limited TG equipment<\/a> and comments on how much he loves the classic TG designs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember90\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One especially interesting unit is the Harrison Lineage rack. It contains preamps based on four different generations of Harrison console design including the 32C, MR Series, Series 10 and Series 12.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember91\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">EastSide Sound also retains a tape machine although Marc acknowledges that relatively few clients are now willing to absorb the additional cost and time involved in recording to tape.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember92\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The machine is nevertheless available for sessions that require it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember93\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/5kmYE2\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Avid Pro Tools MTRX II<\/a> is used to connect the studio\u2019s Pro Tools system with the Harrison console and Dante network. This gives the control room a flexible combination of analogue and digital routing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember94\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Despite being built around 2001, the control room has a warm 1970s feeling. Large doors were later added so the piano could be moved more easily without having to turn it onto its side.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember104\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For rock sessions, the drums can be placed in the main room while the piano remains isolated. For jazz sessions, the upright bass player, drummer and pianist can perform simultaneously while maintaining visual contact.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember105\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Other booths can accommodate singers, horn players, percussionists and guitar amplifiers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember106\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Even the airlock between the control room and live room is wired so it can be used as an additional recording space.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember107\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This flexibility allows EastSide Sound to capture the energy of musicians playing together while still providing enough separation for editing, balancing and mixing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember108\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The ceiling is carefully shaped to break up reflections and the ventilation system was designed with separate supply and return paths.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember109\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc also installed hooks in the ceiling during a period when he was recording large percussion ensembles with John Zorn. Microphone cables could be suspended from above rather than running across the floor where musicians might step on them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember110\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is a practical idea born from years of real recording experience.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember111\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" collection of vintage Rogers drum kits assembled by Lou Holtzman.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember113\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These kits include several extremely rare shell sizes such as a 14-by-14-inch floor tom and other pieces that serious drum collectors may spend years trying to locate.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember114\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A modern <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fsearch%3Fs%3DDW%2Bdrum%2Bkit&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fsearch%3Fs%3DMicrotech%2BGefell%2BM%2B940&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Microtech Gefell M 940<\/a> on the hi-hat and comments on how great it sounds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember117\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">He also demonstrates the <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/e1K3GQ\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">LEWITT DTP 640 REX<\/a>, one of his favourite dual-element kick drum microphones. It combines a dynamic capsule and condenser capsule inside the same body, allowing the engineer to balance the attack and weight of the kick drum.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember118\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The live room contains a Steinway B grand piano from approximately 1988.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember119\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc explains that having access to both EastSide Sound and Audio Confidential gives him two very different pianos to offer clients. A pianist can compare the Steinway at EastSide Sound with the Yamaha at Audio Confidential and choose whichever instrument suits the production.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember120\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The studio also houses a <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/c\/2234803\/789347\/11319?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweetwater.com%2Fstore%2Fsearch%3Fs%3DHammond%2BB-3&amp;partnerpropertyid=1999156\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Hammond B-3 organ<\/a>, giving Marc another reason to bring certain projects to EastSide Sound.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"ember121\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">A Guitar Amp Booth Built for Experimentation<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember122\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">One of the smallest isolation rooms has been converted into a dedicated guitar amplifier booth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember123\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Different amplifier heads can be stored on shelves while multiple cabinets remain permanently available below.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember124\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Tie lines connect the amp room to the rest of the facility. Marc believes darker broadcast finishes were often selected because highly reflective silver microphones could cause problems under television lighting.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember143\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The RCA KU-2A is sometimes referred to as the \u201cskunk\u201d microphone because of the stripe running along its body. The microphone even has the word \u201cback\u201d marked twice to prevent engineers from accidentally recording into the wrong side.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember144\" class=\"ember-view microphones is the Melodium 42B.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember153\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The 42B was created as a French alternative to the RCA 44 and uses a proprietary three-pin connector rather than a modern XLR connection.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember154\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Its front panel includes French settings for speech, voice and music. Marc normally leaves the microphone in its music position although the voice setting appears to introduce a high-pass filter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember155\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Because the Melodium microphones are extremely heavy and valuable, safety cables are used to prevent them from hitting the floor if a stand is knocked over.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember156\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Another standout is the Polish HUM Audio RS-2 ribbon recording system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember157\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The microphone can operate in stereo or mid-side configurations and arrives with its own preamplifier and power supply. A remote control connected by XLR allows engineers to adjust gain, polarity, high-pass filtering, air boost and mid-side decoding from a distance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember158\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc has used the RS-2 for room recording, piano and percussion and considers it one of his favourite ribbon microphones.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember159\" class=\"ember-view from Italy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember161\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Italian companies including CGE, Geloso, Magneti Marelli and Allocchio Bacchini produced microphones using designs or patents influenced by RCA.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember162\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These microphones were often manufactured for Italian radio and television companies that needed locally produced alternatives to importing American equipment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember163\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The CGE ribbon microphones feature beautiful decorative finishes designed to resemble wood.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember164\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Geloso microphones use an unusual dual-ribbon design and feature an especially charming Italian switch. Rather than being marked \u201con\u201d and \u201coff,\u201d the controls are labelled with the Italian equivalents of \u201cyes\u201d and \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember165\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Magneti Marelli is now better known as an automotive component manufacturer but the company once produced ribbon microphones. Marc owns an early Magneti Marelli ribbon that visually resembles the RCA 74B.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember166\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Perhaps the rarest Italian microphones in the collection were made by Allocchio Bacchini in Milan.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember167\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The company originally produced radios and microphones but was forced to concentrate on military equipment during the Second World War. Its facilities were later destroyed and very few examples of its microphones are known to survive.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember168\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc owns two Allocchio Bacchini microphones including a large RCA 44-style ribbon and an elegant green model with a beautifully detailed grille.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember169\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Finding modern stand adapters for these microphones presented its own challenge. Marc had to combine several pipe and brass thread adapters before he could mount them safely on a conventional microphone stand.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember170\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-65187 lazyload\" reader-text-block__paragraph\">Modern Italian microphone maker Teo Pizzolante of Braingasm Lab helped Marc create the first MU-1 prototype.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember173\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc approached Teo because Braingasm had experience designing both condenser and ribbon microphones.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember174\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The MU-1 grew from Marc\u2019s desire to combine different microphone characteristics and create a flexible studio tool inspired by the sounds he had collected and used throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember175\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The EastSide Sound locker contains several Braingasm microphones including the Ferro condenser, the Multi-D-Lux and the Nastro ribbon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember176\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There are also unusual omnidirectional microphones with bodies that look more like small sculptures than conventional recording equipment.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember177\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">The JZ Microphones Behind Major Sessions<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember178\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc\u2019s JZ Microphones collection has its own dedicated section.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember179\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">He owns two original <a class=\"nnFuRRoHPXobuvhnNQKLVHTCAHHBMHsMruzUf \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetwater.sjv.io\/NGo4WV\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">JZ Microphones Black Hole microphones<\/a> and describes the Black Hole capsule as an important influence on his love of large-diaphragm gold-sputtered condenser microphones.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember180\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc used JZ microphones while recording U2 in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember181\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A Black Hole was used for vocals while a pair of BT201 microphones were used as drum overheads and later on The Edge\u2019s acoustic guitar.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember182\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc loved the Black Hole so much that he asked JZ Microphones to build a custom stereo version.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember183\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The result is a unique microphone that Marc calls the Butterfly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember184\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It combines two Black Hole capsules in a Flamingo-style body. The capsules can be rotated and angled to create different stereo configurations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember185\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc has used the Butterfly on acoustic guitars, congas, drum overheads and numerous other sources. It has become one of his most frequently used stereo microphones.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember186\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" interpretation of the RCA 44 and is stored in an original wooden case with Japanese markings.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember189\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Later versions include the Toshiba Type B from 1961 and the more commonly encountered Type G from 1963.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember190\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Marc also shows an NHK broadcast ribbon microphone based on the RCA BK-5A.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember191\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">NHK is Japan\u2019s public broadcasting organisation, making its historical position roughly comparable to the BBC in Britain or NBC in the United States.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember192\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These microphones reveal how influential RCA designs became throughout the world. The amplifier room makes experimentation easy. The cable hooks keep floors clear during complicated percussion sessions. The control room combines classic analogue equipment with modern Dante and Pro Tools workflows.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember197\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Even the lounge tells the studio\u2019s story.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember198\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Photographs cover the walls showing Lou, Marc and many of the artists and engineers who have passed through EastSide Sound.
