Now, onto FAQ Friday! Today’s featured question is: I’m looking to upgrade my interface and add tons of microphones to my mic locker. With all the different options out there how do I know I’m getting the right ones for me? Does it matter?
If you are looking to upgrade your interface, especially if it is 10-15+ years old, I say go for it! The interfaces you can get from companies like UAD and Audient these days are incredible, and are a fraction of the cost of what interfaces used to be.
You may also feel you need to upgrade your interface so that you can have more inputs if you are moving into recording live drums or bands and need to have more mics set up, and I get that. So at the end of the day: if you want to upgrade your interface, I am not going to argue with you. An upgraded interface will likely give you an increase in quality, as well as flexibility, and you can get a lot of bang for your buck with the systems that are out today.
As for microphones, the most important thing is to be selective and to be smart about how you spend your money. There is a massive price range when it comes to microphones, and you really can sink a lot of money into them, but you don’t necessarily have to. For example, if you were to walk into someone’s studio and they had 20-30 microphones to mic up a band, with just one really nice vocal mic, one nice ribbon, a handful of 57s, and then maybe 10 or 15 mics from Lewitt, AudioTechnica, etc., no one is going to think they don’t know what they are doing!
