iZOTOPE Ozone 9 Demo

We have a very exciting episode for you today, iZOTOPE has released Ozone 9 and we are going to try it out!

I don’t use Ozone 9 so this is going to be a completely new thing for me.  It has is an AI feature, machine learning if you prefer that term. – haha

Basically, you can lay in an already mastered reference track, and then Ozone 9 will read it. Take the EQ, Compression, all the other settings and then apply them to your track! That is something I really want to try out plus I want to hear some of the presets and see how Ozone 9 works.

One of the things that tend to happen now that we are increasingly mixing in the box is we tend to mix at almost mastered levels. I find that almost every mix I’ve done in the box and those that I’ve been sent that were mixed in the box come in pretty darn hot.

We end up putting stuff on the master bus and use it a little bit more aggressively than we would when we are mixing through consoles. – That just seems to happen by nature.

I have quite a few mixes here that aren’t necessarily square away but printed pretty hot. We also have a track that I mixed and referenced an older album t do. I also have the benefit of a world-class mastering engineer doing that. – We’re going to see how that shoots out later in the video below.

I think the biggest thing for Ozone 9 for me is to see what it does with those in the box tracks because when you’ve committed and you’re starting to use tracks that are pretty close to being limited. – What can it do with that? That is the world that most of us are in.

We’re getting tracks all the time and mastering engineers are getting them and. They’re not quite blobs but they are very aggressively compressed and limited.

This is going to be a very interesting episode. Let’s start by listening to it in these scenarios;

Ozone 9 is very interesting technology, I wasn’t sure how sophisticated it was going to be but it is pretty darn sophisticated!

Does it sound exactly the same? No, because Emily would have gotten there in many other different ways. Top mastering engineers would use hardware as well as software and a combination of stuff.

Emily’s master is really really clean and loud whereas when the Ozone 9 master is getting louder you can hear a little bit of grit coming in. – But with that said it is pretty darn close.

Again there is no way you’re going to have a world-class mastering engineer up against it. But it does prove the fact that it can get super close given the right materials.

Ultimately this is going to be a tool for those of us who are mixing in a box and need to get master quality a quickly as possible. The fact that is pulled out the low-mids, and the harshness in the high-mids was really good.
