Jacob Collier is one of the most renowned musical artists of the 21st century, not only for his unique musicianship and use of complex harmony, but also for his unique production process. Unlike many other Grammy award winners, so much of what Jacob produces comes out of a studio not unlike your own. His home studio, filled with musical gadgets and goodies was the very place he learned how to walk, and as such is filled with a creative energy entirely unique to itself.
Warren sat down with Jacob and his engineer Ben Bloomberg to discuss not only the nature of Jacob’s production process, but some of the unique innovations they’ve developed together for Jacob’s live work. As a graduate of the MIT media lab Ben began his work in audio with the Opera of the Future Group, a collective dedicated to the advancement of musical technology.
Ben’s collaboration with Jacob started back in 2014, with a simple email that would start a multi-year collaboration (perhaps there’s a lesson in there for you aspiring producers!). During this time, the duo developed numerous devices to aid Jacob in his performing and songwriting process. Machines like Jacob’s harmonizer, which allowed him to move from video production to a live performance setting.
There’s so much more to cover! During the course of the chat Jacob, Warren, and Ben discuss everything from DAWs to negative harmony. Check out the video for more!
