Keyboardist & Jazz Composer Jeff Lorber Interview

Jeff Lorber Interview & Studio tour

Hey friends, I hope you’re marvellously well!
While many of you probably know me as a pop/rock producer, what you may not know is that I actually am a huge fan of classical music and Jazz. In my teenage years I was obsessed with learning the scales and playing style of Jazz guitarists Joe Pass and Howard Roberts and would practice for years.

Keyboardist, Jazz Composer and Producer Jeff Lorber

In this episode, we have the pleasure of talking to Jeff Lorber at his studio JHL Sound. Jeff is a phenomenal piano player and jazz composer, who studied under the same teacher as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett.

In addition to his extensive solo career counting over a dozen albums, he has also done session work with major producers and artists such as Clive Davis, Richard Perry, The System, Herb Alpert, Dave Koz, Eric Benét, and Laura Branigan.

Jeff’s musical style consists of a unique mix of R&B, Fusion Jazz, Funk and Blues. What I personally love about his playing is that additionally to his great taste in melody and harmonies, he has an outstanding feel for rhythm.

Jeff tells us how he first got started in music, and about his big breakthrough in the industry: Even though he was a highly trained Berklee graduate, he didn’t feel entitled.
Instead, he got out of his way to help out in studios and do whatever he could to hone his craft and broaden his skill set. That’s how he built strong connections in the industry and was recognized: For his passion, hard work and dedication, not by chance.

Jeff takes us through his studio, and shows us his Georg Martin modified SSL console and his beautiful collection of vintage keyboards and synthesizers. You’ll hear him jam on Wurlitzers, Rhodes, Grand Piano and multiple synths.

We had a great time and hopefully we’ll get back for another session with him soon. –  Jeff is the guy who I could just sit and listen to jam all day.

I hope you enjoyed the interview! Please Check Out Jeff’s Music and leave any questions and comments below.

Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,

Warren
