Matt Weiss: GRAMMY-Nominated Pop, Hip-Hop, & EDM Engineer

Matt Weiss is a GRAMMY-nominated, platinum recording and mixing engineer who’s worked with artists like Akon, Swae Lee, Jeremih, Chris Brown, Sonny Digital, Nicky Minaj, Becky G, Anitta, Rick Ross, Farruko, and Ozuna.

Matt grew up in Philadelphia with creative parents: his mother, a doll sculptor, and his step-father, a jazz pianist. He had the opportunity to study a handful of different instruments, including clarinet, piano, drums, guitar, and voice. Out of all these, Matt really found an interest in the Roland Groovebox MC-303 — a classic sequencer — which his step-dad bought him one year as a birthday present.

This was in part the beginning of his affinity for pop, hip-hop, and electronic-based music.

In college, Matt studied Music Composition and Theory at Sarah Lawrence in Yonkers, New York. As a freshman, he became the head sound tech for his class. This job required him to record and render all the concerts held on campus. Even though he had a passion for writing his own music, his college job led him to discover how much more he enjoyed recording it!

In 2005, Matt left university to pursue a career as a recording engineer. In 2007, he picked up a job at Studio E in Philadelphia, where he recorded overdubs for the GRAMMY-nominated album The Othello Syndrome by Uri Caine. He worked as an in-house engineer at Studio E until 2010, when he decided to start freelancing. From that point on, his focus shifted from recording to mixing.
Between 2010 to 2016 he had the chance to work with high profile clientele like Ronnie Spector, Arrested Development, SisQo, and Dizzee Rascal.

In 2013, Matt mixed the album Rosso by King Midas which won the Norwegian Spellemann Award for Best Rock Album.
A few years later he moved to Los Angeles where he partnered with Kanye West’s engineer Andrew Dawson running a commercial recording studio.

Not long after relocating to LA, Matt became a technical consultant on the construction of multi-platinum artist Akon’s own recording studio. He proved himself a valuable asset to the project and more, as Akon asked him to be his personal recording and mixing engineer. In 2019, Matt earned a platinum plaque for engineering “Comentale” by Ozuna featuring Akon.

Above all, Matthew Weiss enjoys giving back to the audio community by regularly sharing his wealth of knowledge over at The Pro Audio Files!
