This is a great question:
In today’s digital download and streaming age, when should an artist release a single vs. an EP vs. a full album?
The first question I have for you is “who are you?”
I think if you’re Pop / EDM you should be releasing singles only. I would recommended doing videos for every single, they don’t have to be expensive videos, but they will help you create more of an impact with fans and potential fans.
Can you go the single route with more of a Classic Rock/Singer/Songwriter sound?
Of course you can, however for a lot of us when we’re discovering new bands and hear a sound we like, we want to dive deeper immediately. You’re not competing in a pop world where you’re going up against acts like Rhianna and Justin Bieber so I think an Album or EP release strategy makes more sense in this case.
Pop artists can have a single with one message and then follow that up with something completely different. They’re hitting it out of the park with each song.
A band on the other hand, let’s say from a small town in Wisconsin, may have something to say about growing up in the midwest. For me, bands have a really strong identity. for example everybody knows the Beatles are from Liverpool!
You can have 2 – 4 singles on an album – it’s all about the song. Work towards having incredible songs. It’s always about the song.
None of what I’m saying are absolutes, you can do any version of these! At the end of the day it’s all about the song!
