In today’s video we’re going to try out a mic from our good friends over at Roswell!
Matt McGlynn sent us this new Roswell Colares microphone to try and he has insisted that it is an amazing vocal microphone – and I believe him!
Matt has been instrumental in helping us out! What I really appreciate about Matt is that he’s a very straight shooter, when something is good he praises it, and when somethings not he has good reasons.

When he started Roswell Microphones a couple years ago everyone got excited because we all knew he would make really great microphones at an affordable price.
The Roswell Colares, which is an entirely vocal microphone retails for only $1259 USD.
It’s great to have two different singers with two completely voices. We recorded David Ottestad from the Workday Release and Lee Anna James McCullun.
David has a much softer, very beautiful voice, and Lee Anna has some schnizzle in her voice! haha
One thing about Matt McGlynn is he’s a bit of a badass as Americans would say.
He helps so many people and if you want to know about gear his site RecordingHacks.com is second to none. He started the site to help people starting out with the $100 – $200 Chinese microphones, telling them how to upgrade and improve them. Then it grew into a company Roswell Microphones that makes wonderful microphones.
I know we champion a lot of microphones and a lot of companies, but Matt has been instrumental in helping so many people! We have done two live streams with him discussing all the different kinds of microphones available and their Pros/Cons and not once did he try to push his own microphones. I respect him immensely. When he said this is a new microphone that we should try out, I was all over it.

To be honest I think it’s pretty darn smooth in the high-end. With David’s voice I added a lot of high-end and at no time did it get brittle.
I absolutely love what this mic does, with Lee Anna it really brought out some crunch without ever getting too aggressive. Controlled high-end on a microphone is really important.
In today’s music everything is fighting for space- you want a mic that you can brighten up without it sounding brittle, even on the simple track that we did with David it sounded beautiful.

The Colares® is a large-body condenser microphone with a larger than life sound. It is our flagship vocal microphone, and excels at injecting color, vibe, excitement, and life to a track.
This is not a neutral or transparent microphone. It is unapologetically rich in both tone and harmonics. The design inspiration was the Telefunken ElaM 251, but our goal was to deliver all the detail and vintage tone of the 251 without the cost, maintenance hassle, or noise floor of a tube microphone.

We build every Colares by hand in our shop in Northern California. Each mic is “burned in” for at least 24 hours on our proprietary conditioning rig, then extensively tested before the Roswell badge goes on the front of the mic. The mic ships in a custom, heavy-duty flight case, with a Rycote shockmount.
