Soyuz is a very special company: All of their microphones are handcrafted in Russia, using the original technology used to build microphones in the 40s and 50s. They’re assembling and tuning their own capsules from the raw materials, winding their own transformers, and assembling the electronics in–house with point–to-point wiring.
Featuring an outstanding build quality and some of the best capsules and transformers around, their microphones exhibit a unique character and sound.
In this review, I’m testing the SU-013, a small diaphragm FET condenser microphone on multiple sources: Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Drums, Piano and Vocals, and putting it up against one of my favourite vintage microphones, a Neumann KM56!
Even in comparison to one of the best mics out there, the SU-013 held its own: I was really impressed with its balanced frequency response and full-bodied sound. This microphone is very versatile and can be used on a lot of different sources. With a spaced pair, you can probably make a full record using just these mics.
