Is Mastering for media type normally a package deal or does one order each sort of a la carte?

  5. Wiz says:

Could you explain please, as to why printing a mix below -6dBfs is “wasting resolution’? How is a mix printed peaking at -6dBFs any less accurate than a mix with peaks at -12dBFs?

    1. Warren Huart says:

Hi @disqus_ZUhS4Sh7Mc:disqus Please go over to Adam’s Forum and ask him any questions you have this week! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    Yep, very helpful.
Especially nowadays where so mcuh is put on the mixbus that I kind of wonder what’s left for the mastering engineer to work with…

  12. Mange says:

Maybe not my top 5 questions to a mastering engineer. Definately the answers I would expect. Especially revealed by the answer to question 3 as I always wondered about the average master slutz mantra to send files to ME with enough headroom to work with. This answer make total sense to me.
Looking forward to the days at the forum.

    1. Warren Huart says:

Hi @plap-disqus-37a749d808e46495a8da1e5352d03cae:disqus definitely my top 5 questions! I get asked these ones all the time, I’m very glad he answered them! Please go to the Forum and ask your questions, I’ll be excited to hear them and Adam’s answers! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

  13. Kamil Śliwiński says:

As always, great read! Always learning new things on here. Quick question though, what is an RMS value?

    1. Warren Huart says:

Hi @kamil_liwi_ski:disqus RMS is a horrible term! haha it literally means ‘root mean square’ yes I’m sure you are more confused, I was when I first heard that! Ultimately people use ‘rms’ to describe ‘audio power’! I hope that somewhat helps? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

      1. Kamil Śliwiński says:

Yes, yeas that helped a lot! I know you said to use your best judgement and to have the mix not too hot, but not too quiet pre-mastering, but is there a general RMS value that would be considered “healthy” to send to a master engineer? I tend to use the Slate Digital FG-X to check the values, but since I honestly don’t fully understand what the values mean anyway, it’s hard to gauge what would be considered good or bad. Any thoughts?

        -Kamil S.

        1. Warren Huart says:

Hi @kamil_liwi_ski:disqus That’s a great question! Honestly I use logic, I don’t have long term peaks/clipping but I’m not printing too low! Did you leave Adam a question? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

  14. Danny MacNevin says:

Excellent stuff to know! Thanks again Warren!

    1. Warren Huart says:

Hi @dannymacnevin:disqus You’re welcome!! Thanks very much! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

  15. fuzzbox says:

Number 3 well, well, well… I was always told to get the levels to no more that -10 dBfs and let mastering to the rest! I’ve been using that for awhile and not bothering to try it at near 0 dBfs… or -2 dBfs. So, why was/is -15-10 dBfs considered to be the norm (in my case anyway) with mastering raising it?

    1. Warren Huart says:

Hi @plap-disqus-f2217062e9a397a1dca429e7d70bc6ca:disqus Wonderful stuff! It seems like you have a great process! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
