Every musician has those impossible dreams when they are young.
You stare at the backs of records, read the names of the musicians, producers, engineers and studios, and wonder how anyone ever gets into those rooms.
For Warren Huart, one of those full-circle moments came while working on Ace Frehley’s Origins Vol. 1.
The album featured classic songs that influenced Ace, including tracks originally by Cream, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf and more. During the recording of Thin Lizzy’s “Emerald,” Slash came down to the studio to trade guitar solos with Ace in real time.
Ace on one side.
Slash on the other.
Two Marshalls cranked.
Two guitar legends playing opposite each other in the room.
No distortion pedals. No complicated tricks. Just great players, great amps, microphones on cabinets and a moment that every teenage rock fan dreams of.
After Ace and Slash finished their solos, Ace asked Warren to play the harmony guitar part.
For a kid who grew up in a small village in England, with no music industry connections, that was a truly surreal moment.
However, the deeper lesson is that these moments do not usually happen overnight. They come from years of learning, working, showing up, making mistakes, improving, building relationships and staying committed to the thing you love.
