Since starting Produce Like A Pro we’ve been blessed to be able to lift the curtain many times and go behind the scenes to see how some of the world’s greatest recording equipment manufacturers make their wares. Once again we are privileged to go to one of the world’s leading speaker manufacturers PMC to see one of their manufacturing plants and worldwide headquarters.
PMC, the British loudspeaker manufacturer, has been at the forefront of recording excellence since 1991. PMC was formed by Peter Thomas (previously of the BBC) and Adrian Loader (previously of FWO Bauch, an audio distributor) in 1990. In 1991 they produced their first loudspeaker, the BB5-A, which was a large studio monitor.
PMC‘s BB5-A loudspeaker, the first of its kind, was sold to the BBC and Metropolis Studios, with the BBC still using it at their Maida Vale studios. PMC’s contribution to recording excellence was recognised with an Emmy award. Notable users of the original BB5 include Prince and Stevie Wonder’s Wonderland Studio.
PMC pioneered “Advanced Transmission Line” technology. This innovative design absorbs unwanted frequencies that radiate from the rear of the speaker driver, resulting in higher sound pressure levels and deeper bass extension. By allowing the lowest frequencies to pass through the folded line within the cabinet and emerge in phase from a vent on the front or rear face of the cabinet, the upper bass and midrange are not masked by harmonic distortion. This unique design also allows the speakers to be played at lower volumes without any loss of frequency response.
Transmission line speaker design is a complex process that requires balancing many parameters and variables. A transmission line effectively controls the motion of the drive unit and greatly enhances its bass performance. It also lowers distortion and raises the maximum possible output level. However, achieving an ideal result is no small feat due to the many variables involved, including drive unit parameters, line length, area, taper and profile, foam placement, thickness, and specification. It is no wonder that only a few companies have successfully developed transmission line speakers, like PMC.
PMC, are not just a leading manufacturer of Professional Studio products, they also offer a wide range of hi-fi products. With a commitment to quality and innovation, PMC’s hi-fi products have been designed using the same technology as their studio products, ensuring exceptional sound quality.
One standout product in PMC‘s hi-fi range is the ci series of on-wall/in-wall speakers. The PMC Ci (Custom Installation) Series typically includes a range of in-ceiling speakers, in-wall speakers, and on-wall speakers, each tailored to meet different installation requirements and room configurations. Featuring discreet designs, paintable grilles, and adjustable tweeters to ensure they blend harmoniously with the room decor and provide optimal sound dispersion. The ci speakers use the folded transmission line, a technology that has been used in PMC’s speakers for years. What sets the ci series apart is that they are voiced identically to PMC’s Studio speakers, ensuring that they deliver the same high-quality sound that PMC is known for.
In the accompanying video, the original founders sons, Oliver Thomas and Tom Loader take us through the research and development and manufacture.
