We’re back with another episode of FAQ Friday! We have some marvellous questions to answer this week!
Today’s feature question is: What are your tips on recording and mixing a track with only drums, guitar, and bass?
When it comes to recording with only three instruments, less is more!
When you’re recording, you need to make sure that you have really great, close microphones on the drums, but you also should get as much of the ambience of the room as possible. This means you can have two distinct drum sounds.
For recording guitars, you need to get great parts, interesting sounds, great tone, interesting use of room ambience, and plug in reverbs.
If you apply these elements, you can make interesting music with only three instruments!
A lot of iconic songs, including ‘Every Breath You Take’ and ‘Message In A Bottle’ by the Police, were created using only drums, guitar and bass! Each part and idea put into these songs are so integral that you cannot be without one instrument and still have the iconic sound.
If you are looking to create music with only three instruments, then look back and listen to these bands that have created big hits, such as the Police, who often use only drums, guitar and bass. You can create edgy, interesting songs with limited number of instruments.
Sometimes, having the supposed ‘limitations’ of only using three instruments can push you to create more interesting and overall better work!
