Hi Friends, I hope you’re marvellously well!
We’re back with another free tutorial by my good friend and producer extraordinaire Phil Allen: Phil shows you how to capture great electric guitar sounds and discusses several techniques to get different tones and timbres when recording electric guitars. Session guitarist Justin Norman walks you through his guitar pedal setup and explains how to dial in a low-noise – high-energy guitar sound and records various guitar parts:
- Clean guitars supporting and interacting with the lead vocal melody
- Chords to fill out the choruses and add texture &fullness
- Slide guitars for vibe and dimension
This tutorial is an excerpt of Phil Allen’s soon to be released course “Music Production”. If you have purchased Phil Allen’s course Mixing in the Box, in his new tutorial Phil will show you how he recorded and produced the song from scratch. So be on the lookout, it’s going to be good!
Please leave a bunch of questions and comments below: Which guitar amps and pedals are your favourites? Do you have a go-to guitar recording chain?
I’m looking forward to hearing your insights! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,
Warren

I’ve been toying with the idea of grabbing one of these pics! Sounded great
I like how much of this video focused on getting the sound right before recording. Super important! Lately I’ve been using an sm57 and tlm103 close up. Then a Royer112 ribbon mic for the room sound blended in.
Thanks very much @wardrogers:disqus! I agree get the best sound first before recording! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I was smiling ear to ear with eyes closed when he started on the slide guitar.. beautiful!!

Hi, thanks for the video! What model is The Bad Cat-amp and also Gibson? ES- 335? It looks quite small. I have a home studio and now using Kemper for recording electrics but still dreaming of some nice small amp that gives a good, warm sound without disturbing my neighbours..
Holy cow, nice slide.
