Today, we are testing out the OC818 from Austrian Audio! What is unique about this microphone is that it records the front and the back of the capsule at the same time, and also includes an app that allows you to control the polar pattern in real time, which is incredibly useful in live situations!
The PolarDesigner plugin (if you record in stereo, you can also adjust the polar pattern after you’re finished recording!) allows you to create the polar pattern of your dreams. You can craft different polar pattern responses across 1-5 crossover bands, and store, recall, and share presets.
That plugin is also available for free! Click here to download the free PolarDesigner plugin!
We also get to give one of these wonderful microphones away! Enter for your chance to win an Austrian Audio OC818 below!
The OC818 is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with multiple polar patterns. It can take up to 148 dB SPL, which means you can put it almost anywhere you like. This feature, along with the adjustable polar patterns, make it very versatile and very useful in live situations. You could place multiple OC818s around a room to mic a live band, and then control the polar patterns to make it very tight. In addition, if you record in stereo, you can even change the polar pattern after you’ve finished recording!
To test the OC818 out, we are going to be recording a song that I wrote for my wife, called “Perfect to Me”. When we record we will leave everything open and record in stereo, so we can see how this microphone sounds and how the adjustable polar pattern plugin works!
We also have the multitracks for you so you can hear how this mic sounds and mix the track for yourself! If you download the PolarDesigner plugin, you will be able to adjust the polar pattern in these multitracks as well!
