We’re back with another episode of FAQ Friday!
We are going to do a slightly different FAQ Friday today since we’re at day 1 of Summer NAMM, We’re going to walk around and talk to a whole bunch of manufacturers, producers, and engineers that we meet throughout the day!
We spoke to Jonathan Pines from Rupert Neve Designs about his FAQ “How to get a better vocal sound”
Matching a microphone to your voice is a great place to start. Microphones are like the color palette that we have, there are days that I want to use lucerne, crimson and phthalo blue, there are days I want black and white, and there are days that I want to finger paint with red green and blue.
It’s finding the right thing that fits and complements your voice. You have to think about what kind of music you do, what do you like and dislike about your voice? Or what do you want to change?
• Your voice doesn’t cut through, you would want a brighter more forward microphone.
• Your voice sounds thin and small, Maybe a Ribbon something bigger and richer would be more effective to it.
On top of choosing the best microphone, you can look at how a mic preamp might complement you. Take a look at the types of EQ the difference between standard EQ or Inductor EQ, Warmer or bigger sound.
Do you need more cut? Do you need to project through more? What kind of compression are you using?
Getting the best sound out of your voice requires some acquired knowledge of your voice.
The best answer is to try things out, I think people just starting should get a pallet of microphone choices. Find something you like your voice on and makes you want to perform better.
That’s the end of day one of Summer NAMM. Have a marvellous weekend.
